Aquabox sends aid to East Africa

7th July 2017

Aquabox continues to provide aid to countries around the world where it is most needed and there is no access to safe clean drinking water and our latest consignment of aid boxes and water filters has left the depot destined for Uganda as part of our continued support for the famine victims in East Africa.

Since the early months of 2017, parts of South Sudan have been experiencing a famine following several years of instability in the country’s food supply caused by war and drought. The famine, largely focused in the northern part of the country, has been estimated to affect almost 5 million people (about half of the South Sudanese population). As food shortages have spread right across the country, thousands of people have been fleeing south into neighbouring Uganda and Kenya.

Similarly, in Somalia drought and famine are having a devastating effect. According to UNICEF, as many as 27 million people across the region do not have access to safe drinking water, so the risk of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera spreading is inevitable. Malnutrition is having a disastrous impact and as always when this happens children are among the worst affected.

east africaWorking with one of our established partners Christian African Relief Trust (CART,) 250 Aquaboxes were dispatched to Uganda on 7th July. This follows a shipment of 60 Aquaboxes to Malawi in May, also through CART.

Earlier this year in March, in partnership with our sister Rotary charity, Roll Out The Barrel, based on the Isle of Wight, we shipped 3 Aquaboxes, 10 Community Filters and 48 Family Filters for distribution in Somalia.

Please help us to continue this vital help to those in need in East Africa.
