The death toll and the number of people affected following floods in Malawi, East Africa has risen to 29 dead and 142 injured. Over 140,000 have been affected and are currently sheltering in 31 camps. Aquabox have today (24th April) responded following a call out for help from The Department of Disaster Management Affairs in Malawi (DoDMA).
We have sent 100 AquaAid boxes, each consisting of over 40 items of essential supplies for a family group as well as 900 family water filters. This will help 10,000 people in the worst areas. Persistent heavy rains triggered widespread flooding across several districts, particularly lakeshore areas such as Nkhotakota, which has been the most severely affected. Nkhotakota District experienced two waves of devastating floods.
Glenn Stewart, Chair of Board of Trustees Christian African Relief Trust sent us photos and a video showing the devastation these floods are causing.
Glen said, “The support from Aquabox will go a long way in providing vital clean water for drinking, washing and cooking. The aid boxes will support families in dire need of essential items for survival”. He continued “We are so grateful for this rapid response, and our heartfelt thanks go to all the volunteers and supporters at Aquabox”.
The humanitarian impact continues to rise due to the heavy rain and consequent floods across several councils of Malawi, most of them located in the southern areas. We will keep monitoring the situation to see if we can send further help.
